RF Needling: Treatment for Acne Scars

Acne scars, as well as surgical, traumatic, or chicken pox facial scarring, can be unwanted reminders of the past. Fine lines and wrinkles, skin discoloration, and sun damage are also an unwelcome guest on one’s face. Jean Chapman, M.D., at LaserMed in Alpharetta, GA, has carefully selected RF Needling , an advanced fractional radio-frequency treatment which combines ablation and a microneedling skin resurfacing technology, to provide skin tone and texture improvement for the treatment of scars and similar skin imperfections. Unlike some laser treatments, Fractora RF Needling is suitable for safe use on all skin types and is a popular choice among our younger patients with acne scarring. As a bonus, conditions associated with aging skin that would normally require multiple types of procedures to address concerns respond wonderfully to this innovative procedure.

Dual Technologies for Scar Rejuvenation

RF Needling combines the collagen remodeling science behind needling with radiofrequency energy (RF) to stimulate the regenerative process. Depending on the severity of the condition treated, Dr. Chapman can vary the heating level and depth parameters from very superficial non-ablative to deeper minimally ablative treatments. The RF energy is delivered to the skin through an array of electrode pins, thus producing localized heat and small micro-lesion dots in the treatment area. This allows the skin to heal faster.  The heat generated by the pins in the sub-dermal tissue promotes collagen restructuring for an improved appearance to the skin.

Benefits from the Inside-Out

Fractora RF is a completely customizable procedure to address each patient’s individual concerns. It is one of Dr. Chapman’s most popular signature procedures for the reduction of acne scars and similar skin imperfections. The most common areas for acne treatment are cheeks, forehead, and chin. As well, the lower eyelid, upper eyelid, smile lines, mouth, and neck can benefit from this technology. By employing different sized microneedle pins and varying concentrations of energy for superficial to deep tissue concerns, Dr. Chapman can focus on providing the best possible results:

  • Resurfaces the top layers of the skin to reduce acne scarring; surgical, traumatic or pox facial scars; skin discoloration, particularly reds and browns; and uneven texture.

  •  Reducea fine lines, skin sagging, and wrinkles by stimulating collagen production at the deep, dermal skin layer.

  • Tightens and smooths skin.

For optimum results, Dr. Chapman recommends a series of 60-minute sessions every two-to-four weeks. The exact number of sessions depends on the skin conditions to be resolved.

Post-Treatment Expectations

Recovery is an individualized process and varies with each patient depending on the depth of treatment and the area treated. RF microneedling typically requires less downtime than most facial resurfacing treatments and surgical procedures. Most patients can anticipate some swelling, a feeling of tightness, and reddened skin for a few days. These effects may linger a few more days with deeper treatments.  Results are typically visible about two weeks after treatment, with collagen restructuring continuing for up to three months. Complexions once marred by acne scarring and other blemishes will appear fresh, more evenly-toned, and smoother.

Each patient is unique; therefore, results may vary.
