Circulation is Adversely Affected by Varicose Veins

Circulation is important for tissue and organs to remain healthy and function correctly.  The arteries take blood from the heart to the extremities.  The blood delivers oxygen to the tissues.  The veins return the blood, which is now blue because it lacks oxygen, to recirculate.  In order to get the blood back to the heart, veins must work against gravity. One-way valves open to allow blood to flow upward and then close to keep the blood from flowing in the wrong direction.  If the valves malfunction, varicose veins appear.  Those veins can stop the important valve from closing.  If this happens blood pool in the lower veins which makes them grow.

Symptoms are Warnings

The visual of purple veins that look knotted is important, but there are also symptoms associated with varicose veins:

  • Pain-aching or cramping

  • Heaviness/tiredness

  • Burning or tingling

  • Swelling/throbbing

  • Tenderness
